 Travel Information

Please remember you will be traveling in a foreign country. Things will not always go as planned. Flights get delayed, immigration sometimes doesn’t go smoothly, and transportation is often late. The best way to handle this is to be flexible.

Passport and Visa:
Every participant must have a current passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of your arrival. If you do not have a passport, you can get one at your local post office. It will take 4-6 weeks to process.
Visa varies depending on country. Visit traveldocs.com to find out if you need a visa and how to obtain one. Participants are responsible for their own passport and visa fees.

Insurance:
Quiet Hour Ministries provides Short Term Mission Insurance for each participant under age 85, through General Conference Risk Management Services. The period of coverage is up to 14 days. Mission trip participants age 85 and older do not qualify for insurance coverage and, therefore, cannot participate on mission trips.

Safety:
We
will do everything possible to ensure the safety of our participants. All our activities are planned in consultation with our international partners and area experts. Participants will not be allowed to venture off on their own. While we don’t expect any danger, we do take precautions so that all activities involve a minimum of two adults.

          Vaccinations:
Consult your family physician or your local health department/international travel clinic regarding the recommended vaccinations for travel. All travelers should be up-to-date with routinely recommended vaccinations. Which other vaccinations you will need depends upon a number of factors including your age, health status, and previous immunizations. Check Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website here for more information on specific vaccinations and medicines that may be recommended.

Common Ailments:
Intestinal problems due to drinking non-purified water, or eating something that has not been “decontaminated” (washed in Clorox water).  All tap water is unsafe for drinking purposes. Diseases from food and water often cause vomiting and diarrhea. Make sure to bring charcoal and/or diarrhea medicine with you so that you can treat mild cases yourself.

Precautions to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses include using mosquito repellant containing DEET, Picaridin, Oil of lemon eucalyptus/PMD (in EPA-registered repellent products, not essential oil), or IR3535, wearing clothing that covers the arms and legs, and avoiding dark-colored clothing, perfumes, colognes, and after-shaves.

Other common health concerns are:

    Dehydration     Sunburn     Exhaustion

        Water:
It is important for every participant to assume tap water is not safe to drink. Only drink purified water. Safe drinking water will be provided for participants. Pack a reusable water bottle that you can refill each day.

  Trip Resources

Here are some resources for your needs in the team member role that you are assigned:

Each morning, all team members are encouraged to meet together for morning devotions and to review the evening meeting’s sermons and health activities.

• Jesus Video

• Children's program felt set and craft supplies

• Health presentation PowerPoints

• Sermon notes and PowerPoint presentations for speakers to download

Team Member Roles

Team Leader

Coordinates and ensures everything on the Mission Trip goes smoothly. The team leader is responsible for all trip finances and coordinates transportation and site logistics.

Speaker

Each speaker will present the My Friend Jesus messages at their assigned meeting site on the trip.

Jesus video – show 1st 10 minutes at the beginning of each night as an introduction to Jesus.

Responsible for bringing the presentation kit provided by QHM.

Children's Program Leader  & Team Members

The Friendship Hour leader is in charge of coordinating and leading the children's program with the help of supporting team members. We will provide the leader a felt set, Friendship Hour handbook and a package for each of the 10 days.

The children's ministry assistant provides support and help to the leader.

The package includes bible stories to be told using the felt board set, crafts and supplies (crayons, scissors, etc.)

Song service, games and additional activities are at the leader’s discretion. The evangelistic meetings may run longer than the children's program, so prepare to keep the kids actively engaged in learning about Jesus and have age appropriate games or activities in mind. Uncle Arthur type Bible Stories are sure to please young inquisitive minds.

Clinic Team Members

The clinic team members are responsible for the health clinic and health talks before each meeting. They may download the talks from our resource website here: qhministries.org/resources. At times, they are also asked for bringing the following health equipment: glucose meters, stethoscopes, eye testers, eye charts and reading glasses.

Construction Project Team Members

The construction team members put in physical labor to help complete building projects. They should bring construction basics: hammer, screwdriver, pliers, wrench, tape measure, work gloves, work shoes. Areas may be rugged, so closed toe athletic shoes will work best to provide protection against rocks and uneven footing.

 Additional Information

Supplies

Participants departing from the United States will be asked to carry ministry supplies in their luggage, such as eyeglasses and medical supplies for the clinics or Vacation Bible School materials. Supplies will be mailed to volunteers before their departure, and should be taken to the mission destination.

Attire

In an effort to align ourselves with the customs of the countries we will be visiting, as well as follow biblical principles of modesty and appropriateness, we have compiled a suggested packing list for your convenience below. Please be aware that bringing the following items into cultures that are more conservative is occasionally an issue of safety and appropriateness.

1. Inappropriate graphics, logos or wording

2. Heavy makeup

3. Unnaturally colored hair
(men are often not permitted in the pulpit with long hair)

4. Exposed tattoos and piercings

When in doubt, err on the side of modesty, as it is mentioned in the Bible as an important quality (1 Timothy 2:9-10). We want to give the world a living illustration of the inward adorning of the grace of God. We reserve the right for the Quiet Hour team leader to ask any volunteer to change their clothing when necessary.

Donation

*Please note: All donations must be made by the specified deadlines, or volunteers may face airfare surcharge. We consider all funds received for the mission trip as donations to the project. In order to protect the tax deductibility of your gifts, all donations are nonrefundable. The minimum donation covers airfare, double-room lodging, food, on-site transportation and other mission project related costs. Minimum donation amounts do not cover potential luggage fees not included with airfare, departure taxes/arrival fees, visas/passports/tourist cards or any costs that may arise while traveling to and from the mission location. QHM is not responsible for costs involved with volunteers missing their flights or not being able to travel due to outdated passports or other travel documents. Overnight hotel charges for airline layovers are not covered by QHM.

Visit our general FAQ page for more information or contact Georgia Burt at georgiab@qhministries.org or 800-900-9021 with any other questions you migh have.
